When we talk about the calibration of a Laser Level, we are referring to the accuracy of the laser level to be within it’s listed tolerance (eg. 1.5mm @ 20m). Lots of lasers come fully calibrated ready to use when you purchase, although this isn’t always the case.
When we calibrate the laser, we are making sure each of the lasers’ axis (often shown as an x & y on top of lasers) are consistantly equal/level, and within tolerance. Calibration can be done using several different methods, we use a real-life test method rather than collimaters that simulate the process.
To ensure your devices are giving accurate levels when they auto-level, it is worth checking the calibration.
Doing a calibration check at home is super easy. It can be a quick 10 minute procedure but it is important to get right, as any discrepancy in levels can cause inconsistent results when using your laser.
The process involves checking the two axis of the laser against themselves – so comparing the level of the x axis on both sides, then doing the y axis against itself.
It is worth watching the following video to best visualise how this process works, or alternatively you can give us a call on 1800 769 858 where we can explain it.
Lasers can often drift outside of the tolerance over time with use, but can also be affected by many other factors.
Drops & Falls are one of the biggest reason why a laser might go out of calibration. It is always worth making sure that your laser is strongly secured to whatever surface or mount (tripod, jampole, wall bracket etc.) it is on, as lasers can often take internal damage when falling from a height, no matter how well built they are.
We always recommend doing a At-Home calibration check whenever a laser falls over at the bare minimum, but sending it in for a calibration & checkover is even better.
Often Pendulum-Levelling lasers will sound an alarm and flashed when they are moved around whilst their pendulum is unlocked. This is because they will often lose calibration when moved too frequently or aggresively whilst unlocked due to the nature of their levelling system. It is always best to lock the pendulum whenever these lasers are moved. Electronic Levelling Lasers are less prone to this issue as they use sensors to level, which is one of the reasons why they are generally more expensive.
Occasionally when lasers have had heavy damage, they will not level consistently which will cause them to be unable to be repaired or recalibrated, as they will show a different level every time they are moved. In these instances it is often worth considering a replacement.
RedBack Lasers, UNILEVEL, Topcon, Bosch, Stabila, Pro Shot, Sokkia, Imex, Powerline, David White, Geo Fennel, Johnson Level, BeeLine, Leica Lino, Stanley, RoboToolz, PLS, Lufkin, Fukuda, General, Laisai, Futtura, DuraMax, Swiss Level, Leica Rugby, Dewalt, Spectra Precision, Hilti, CMI Lasers, Spot-on, Lasertec, Hauda, QBL, Trimble, BMI – and many more
It is important to note that not all lasers are made to be recalibrated. Some laser brands or models don’t have the ability to be calibrated. Some brands also don’t give information on calibration procedures for their models, forcing you to have to visit them for servicing often at a higher cost.
To ensure that we can definitely recalibrate or service your laser model, it is worth contacting us on 1800 769 858 to find out more.
At RedBack Lasers, we pride ourselves on supplying easy to calibrate lasers. Many local calibration businesses already have the tools to service and calibrate our products. We also carry spare parts for the majority of our models.
We provide repairs, servicing and calibration to all types of laser levels including plumbers lasers, pipe lasers, dumpy levels, rotary laser levels, cross line lasers, tile lasers, green laser levels, construction lasers, and more. We also stock a full range of laser levels for sale and can organise replacement levels if necessary.
We can repair physical damage from drops, replace failed or worn components, provide laser calibrations and more.
All work is guaranteed and quotes are provided for jobs prior to any work being carried out. Please note: Items sent for simple calibration work will not be quoted first, unless the job is in excess of $160 plus GST.
