The most popular type of laser to suit Plumber’s is a Grade Laser. These are Rotating Laser Levels with the ability to tilt the beam over in the desired direction in order to create a consistent slope/grade/fall specifically for water drainage.
Grade Laser Levels for Plumbing are easy to use, offer a range of methods to set grade & offer long range & high accuracy. They’re also extremely tough built to suit the toughest Aussie tradies! Designed to be easily repaired & calibrated when needed.
A specialist type of Laser specifically for Laying Pipe – Pipe Lasers feature high accuracy Grade setting & offer the ability to align the pipe as well while laying it.
These lasers feature an extremely bright dot that is projected onto a target at the other end of the pipe, giving the plumber a precise reference point to set the required grade and ensure the pipe runs straight throughout the trench.
Whilst being less versatile than Rotating Lasers – they tend to be more accurate & easier to use for the specific task of pipe laying.

Single Grade Lasers allow you to set a controlled slope in one direction only (either X or Y axis). Once set, the laser automatically maintains that grade over long distances with consistent accuracy.
They’re ideal when you’re working on projects that require a straight, uniform fall rather than a compound slope.
Common applications include:
Sewer and stormwater trenching
Pipe runs with consistent fall
Driveways and access paths
Simple drainage lines
General earthworks where only one slope is required
Why choose a Single Grade Laser?
Lower cost than dual-grade systems
Faster setup and simpler operation
Excellent accuracy over long runs
Perfect for trades that rarely need dual slopes
If most of your work involves linear drainage or trenching, a single grade laser delivers everything you need without paying for unnecessary complexity.
Dual Grade Lasers give you independent slope control on both the X and Y axes, allowing you to create compound slopes (falling in two directions at once). The laser continuously self-adjusts to maintain both grades across the entire job site.
They’re designed for high-precision, high-complexity earthmoving and civil work.
Common applications include:
Car parks and large slabs
Roads and hardstand areas
Sports fields and playing surfaces
Large drainage catchments
Laser-controlled machinery and site works
Why choose a Dual Grade Laser?
Full control over complex site geometry
Higher productivity on large jobs
Eliminates manual checking and re-setting
Essential for civil, commercial, and infrastructure work
If you regularly work on large areas requiring water runoff in multiple directions, a dual grade laser is the professional standard.
Auto Grade Match is one of the easiest & convient ways to set grade. Where our Grade Match Rotating Lasers stand out from the rest is the automatic grade match and tracking facilitated by the LR720T & LR730T tracking receivers.
This feature allows the user to set the LR720T/LR730T millimeter tracking receiver at a particular height. You press a button on the receiver, which then communicates to the laser unit. The laser will then slope it’s beam on the selected axis to find this height and lock to this grade. This makes setting grades extremely quick and is especially useful where you want to match to a existing slope on site.
Auto-grade matching can be used in two main ways:
By setting a grade in the same manner as a manual grade match, but this time the laser searches for and locks on the receiver automatically. There’s no need to first find level and then move the receiver the required height to match. For example, when holding the receiver 6m from the laser moving the receiver 100mm from level to get a 1 in 60-grade slope.
This is when you want to match an existing grade or slope, like setting a constant grade for a driveway on an undulating hillside. The idea here is that you are wanting to match the general existing grade, but you want to take out the lumps and bumps along the way.
This is achieved by setting the height of the rotating laser and receiver on the staff at the same height from the ground. Take the receiver up or down the hill along with one of the two axes. Then press the Auto Grade Match tracking button and select the axis on the receiver and the laser level does the rest, tracking to and locking onto the position of the receiver and fixing that grade. When the grade is fixed, you use the receiver anywhere along that axis and a level reading now indicates that you are on that constant grade.
This tracking feature can also be used with the laser on its side for vertical alignment – making it the ideal option for fencing contractors looking for a laser to do fence alignment. It can also be beneficial for set-out.
RedBack Rotating Lasers that feature Auto Grade Match :
The quickest, easiest, most accurate Grade Setting is easily Digital Grade.
Digital Grade or Dial-a-Grade as it is often known is a feature normally reserved for the most expensive lasers on the market – until now.
RedBack Lasers’ DGL1010GM is a relatively affordable option for Earthmovers, Plumbers, Fencers, Farmers and more to get a high-end feature at a great price, without skimping on features or quality.
WHY IS DIGITAL GRADE SO GOOD?
To set single or dual grades, it is simply a 2 button press of either the laser or the digital slope remote. You can set grades to 3 decimal places of accuracy (eg. 1.667% rather than 1.7% other brands use).
If you are setting grades constantly or need to be precise with your grades/slopes, then a Digital Grade Laser is the best option.

Pipe Lasers have a few advantages over Rotating Lasers for laying Pipe.
The most important is that it allows you to ensure both alignment & gradient at the same time, something Rotating Lasers can only do 1 at a time (and only certain rotating lasers feature vertical alignment as well).
Pipe Lasers also allow for quicker indication of position of the pipe – because using a visible reference is always quicker than needing to refer to a receiver.
Being able to input Grade as a percentage into the Laser is by far the easiest & most accurate way to set Grades – making Pipe Lasers are more viable option over most Rotating Lasers where you have to use a remote to manually tilt the beam over.
RedBack Pipe Lasers are available in either red (the PL650/DR100) or green (the PL650G/DR100G) laser outputs.
Both the PL650 Range & DR100 Range feature the same <5mW Class 3 power output – which is the maximum brightness you are legally allowed to sell & use in Australia for construction applications.
The green PL650G has a marginally smaller dot making it slightly more defined on the target plate than the PL650.The red PL650 has a higher operating temperature range (up to 40°C) compared to the green PL650G (up to 35°C), so for worksites with high operating temperatures we would recommend the red PL650.
The DR100/DR100G have a higher operating temperature range than the PL650/PL650, being rated to up to 50°C
Whichever laser you purchase you will be getting the same heavy-duty construction and professional-quality performance.
Pipe lasers are designed specifically for laying pipes at a particular grade. Pipe lasers produce a powerful laser dot, which is visible on a target plate mounted in a holder. The idea is to dig to ensure the Pipe is accurately & consistently tilting on the correct grade/slope/fall – to do this you need to try and get the Laser dot to sit inside the goal on the target. These lasers are often placed inside or on top of a pipe or on a tripod at the end of a pipe.
These lasers generally feature large & highly accurate grade settings to suit plumbing, earthmoving & civil applications.
Pipe Lasers are reasonably easy to choose between. The majority of Pipe Lasers tend to operate in a similar fashion – but there are a few nuances when it comes to individual models.
One of the main variations between Pipe Lasers is Laser Colour. RedBack Lasers offers both Red Beam & Green Beam Pipe Lasers in both the PL650 & DR100 Ranges.
Other important variations between models are the minimum diameter of Pipe the laser can fit inside, the operating temperature range that they work well within as well as the Gradient Range that a laser can set electronically.
All these factors need to be taken into consideration – but the core function of accurate grade & alignment of Pipe is something that all of RedBack’s Pipe Lasers excel with.
Nothing!
Unlike a lot of other laser brands on the market – All RedBack Pipe Lasers come complete with all the feet sets, targets, batteries & chargers etc. that are required to be able to operate your new Pipe Laser. They also come complete with a recent calibration certificate – the laser is ready to use out of the box.
No extras required – everything as standard.
If you don’t know/aren’t given grades as percentages for your job – there’s some simple maths involved to convert it into a percentage.
For instance – if you need to set a 1m fall every 60m (1 in 60) slope – you simple divide your fall by your distance (rise/run). Then times by 100 to convert it to percentage.
Eg. 1 divided by 60 (1/60) x 100 = 1.667%

The majority of Aussie Plumbers that we sell lasers to generally grab Rotating Lasers, which are designed to trace a horizontal beam.
The most useful type of laser for plumbers are Grade Lasers, a type of Rotating Laser that can be tilted over in order to create a slope or grade. This can be done in either 1 direction or 2 directions, often referred to as Single Axis or Dual Axis.
These Axis are often referred to as the x & y axis. These axis are perpendicular to each other.
Accurate fall is critical for any drainage job. Whether you’re laying stormwater pipes, sewer lines, or setting up ag drains, even a small error in gradient can lead to inspection failures or water not flowing away properly.
Grade lasers let you set a consistent slope (or “fall”) over long distances — no string lines, no guesswork. You can dial in your fall (like 1 in 100 or 1%) and the laser gives you a constant reference line to trench or lay pipe to.
Generally speaking, these laser vary in how easy they are to set grades & whether they can set single grades (1 axis) or dual grades (2 axis).
The very best Laser Levels for plumbers are Digital Grade or Dial-a-Grade Laser which allow you to input grades into the laser as a percentage, giving you the most accurate and easiest method of setting grades or slopes. For example, plumbers are often using 1 in 60 fall for drainage. This can easily be converted to a percentage ( 1÷60 x 100= 1.667%).
We’ve sold lasers to Aussie Plumbers for a long time & understand what is needed out of a laser level.
They need to be easy-to-use, accurate & reliable.
RedBack Lasers is proud to sell premium laser levels designed to be fully recalibrateable & repairable – not throwaway tools.
We pride ourselves on our after sales service, and try to educate our customers on how to get the most out of their grade laser levels.
Plumbers lasers include rotating lasers with slope or grade features and specialist pipe dot lasers. Grade lasers can set a grade in a few different ways. Digital grade lasers set the grade by entering a percentage grade required. Auto-grade tracking lasers can set grade by the laser tracking to the height of the receiver. Manual grade match lasers require the operator to manually slope the laser to match the height of a receiver.
Besides plumbers lasers, we offer a range of laser levels for sale including pipe lasers, green line lasers, rotary laser levels, cross line lasers, tile lasers, alignment lasers, construction lasers, dumpy levels, plumb lasers and more.
